Expunging a Criminal Record
As the world becomes more connected and the Internet makes it more difficult to keep secrets, your past indiscretions may come back to haunt you. It is important to take steps to minimize damage to your career, community standing and family. At the San Antonio, Texas, law firm of Brown & Norton, our lawyers help protect clients' rights and reputations.
Experience makes the difference
Texas law provides different ways to shield people who have had encounters with the legal system. Our lawyers use the method that best suits the client's situation, obtaining expunctions and non-disclosure or sealing of records. Because our lawyers have so much experience with these types of civil actions, we have been able to obtain relief for many clients who wish to move forward with their lives. Difference between expunction and non-disclosure
Our lawyers can advise you about your eligibility for:
- Expunctions. We seek an expunction when you were arrested, tried, and were acquitted or were convicted, and later pardoned of any misdemeanor and many felonies. Expunging a record can eliminate details of an arrest if the charges were dismissed before the trial.
- Orders of non-disclosure. Obtaining an order of nondisclosure means that law enforcement agencies cannot release your criminal record as it relates to a specific incident. A non-disclosure order applies only if you successfully completed deferred adjudication. Depending on the charge, you may need to show a clean record for five years before submitting a petition for non-disclosure. If your petition is approved, your record is effectively sealed.
Benefits of expunging your criminal record
If you receive an expunction or an order of non-disclosure, you will be able to apply for financial aid, get jobs that might have been closed to you with an arrest record, and keep your record private. It is important to work with an attorney who has experience. Contact Brown & Norton at (210) 227-5103 to learn more.
